Between endless assignments and late-night study sessions, students often forget to slow down and truly enjoy a good meal, opting for efficiency rather than the simple pleasure of savoring delicious foods. On top of this issue of allocating time for delicious foods, finding restaurants that serve authentic dishes at student-friendly prices adds another layer of difficulty.
During stretches of busy times where academic demands feel confining, food offers an escape of its own– flavor that transports the culinary experience beyond the bounds of campus life. Whether you are craving something warm and simple or bold and flavorful, Feedback is spotlighting several restaurants that guarantee classic food, a great time, and, of course, prices that stay within reach.
Semesta [50k – 100k per dish]
Jl. Senopati, RT.8/RW.3, Senayan
Nestled among the bustling restaurants in Ashta District 8, Semesta stands out as a warm and comforting retreat that specializes in authentic Indonesian cuisine. Rooted in the diversity of Nusantaran cuisine, the restaurant highlights dishes that celebrate regional techniques and a mixture of spices and ingredients.
One of their signature dishes is the nasi bakar tongkol asap cabe ijo, which features tuna infused with green chili and a blend of aromatic spices, nestled in fluffy rice and wrapped in banana leaves that absorb a smoky, decadent aroma. The combination of tender smoked fish, fragrant lemongrass, and the rich coconut-infused rice creates a dish that is notably satisfying.
Another reputable dish is the gurame bumbu Seminyak, a grilled Gourami fish glazed with Balinese-style sauce, featuring sweet soy sauce and chilies. Served with lime, the nutty and smoky flavors coat the flaky fish in a tangy caramelized finish.
Semesta leans into a modern interpretation of traditional Indonesian comfort. Wooden furniture lends the space an earthy vibe, while walls lined with mirrors open up the room with an inviting feel, and ambient lighting keeps the atmosphere warm and welcoming. Subtle traditional batik patterns and authentic Indonesian housing motifs are etched into select walls, adding a cultural Indonesian touch.
KAI JIN [100k – 150k per dish]
Jl. Suryo No.25, Kby. Baru, Kota Jakarta Selatan
Specializing in kaisendon, a Japanese-style bowl of warm rice with layers of sashimi, KAI JIN uses fresh, locally caught fish to combine authentic Japanese flavors with the finest quality Indonesian seafood.
Ranging from fresh toro to spear squid, KAI JIN offers a wide variety of Japanese rice bowls at affordable prices. Of the many kaisendon bowls, the maguro & salmon-don and the “omakase kaisen-don” remain customer favorites. The maguro & salmon-don consists of a combination of fresh tuna and salmon, highly esteemed for the simplicity of its flavors. In a similar nature, the omakase kaisen-don features an assortment of chef-curated sashimi, adding a touch of surprise while still delivering delicious flavors.
The quality fish KAI JIN serves stems from their usage of humane preservation techniques, such as ikejime—a slaughtering technique that prevents stress in the fish and extends its shelf life.
In addition to kaisendon bowls, KAI JIN also offers a range of cooked options, including Tonkatsu-dons —a dish consisting of fried pork cutlets served with a savory-sweet sauce over rice —and otoro nabe, a Japanese hot pot featuring the most fatty, prized cut from the belly of bluefin tuna.
With sleek stone floors and ambient lighting, KAI JIN exudes a warm, modern atmosphere. Through its paper lanterns and ink murals, KAI JIN not only offers traditional cuisine and comfort but also delivers an authentic Japanese dining experience.

Each portion is served on an inviting wooden tray, accompanied by sides of house-made banchan: cabbage and radish kimchi, spicy marinated squid, and pickled green chilies.

Inside, Tangban’s aesthetic mirrors the spirit of its cuisine. Warm wood tones line the open kitchen counter, pendant lights cast a soft glow, and clean tilework frames the cooking area, creating a calm, minimalist setting that feels both intimate and thoughtfully designed. Tables are accompanied by traditional Korean ceramics, and walls are decorated with original hand-painted Korean calligraphy panels created by the owner’s family, adding a quiet yet personal charm to the room.
